DAR chapter asks for 'Red Barn'

The University of Georgia's historic but deteriorating "Red Barn" might wind up in Oconee County.

University property managers say they have no use for the barn, which stands on South Milledge Avenue across from the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, leading them to consider moving or demolishing the structure.

The barn also needs repairs after a storm several months ago ripped off siding and part of the roof, said Campus Architect Danny Sniff.

"We're looking at $120,000 just to stabilize it at a time we don't have any money," Sniff said.

"The university doesn't really have a use for it. That's the dilemma. It's not that we don't appreciate it architecturally."

The university asked the state for permission to take down the barn and last week heard nine proposals for the barn's future, ranging from outright demolition to salvaging the lumber to moving the barn.

The best proposal may be to take the big barn apart and reassemble it somewhere in Oconee County, said J. Dorsey, director of real estate and space management for the university.

Members of the Rev. John Andrew Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution hope to move the Red Barn to Oconee County, where the building could be restored and put to good use as a museum or a genealogical research center, according to Dory
