Barn brings Western flair to Colbert

Call it a good old-fashioned Colbert barn-raising - that isn't quite finished.

Ed Brown, a professor emeritus of plant pathology at the University of Georgia, calls his barn a "project in progress."

Originally moving to Madison County in the fall of 1981, Brown - along with his wife, Karen, his sons Ed and Brooks and daughter Vicki - developed and opened the Oak Grove Christmas tree farm on their 30 acres between Hull and Colbert to help offset the cost of their land. Until he closed it several years ago, the tree farm was a popular destination for more than 800 families looking for their tree at Christmas.

When the need arose for a barn to store farm equipment and hay for his horses, Brown envisioned a more creative structure that would be nostalgic and also would benefit the community organizations to which he devotes his time.

"I wanted a different barn," Brown said. "Most of the materials used are salvaged, things that otherwise would have been thrown away. If there's something that's 100 years old and it's usable, it will work another 100 years."

A modest construction project at the onset, Brown first enclosed three sides of the 4,500-square-foot barn, added a second-floor hayloft a short time later, and then drew plans to reflect his greater vision of a Western touch and his own family heritage in Mitchell County.

Growing up in the era of legendary television shows such as "Gunsmoke" and movies featuring John Wayne, Brown was fascinated by the Western way of life and wanted to capture the charm of an old Western town in his barn.

Making additions and improvements as funds became available, Brown continues his 20-year labor of love, commemorating those who have had an influence on his life. Inside the barn are stalls or rooms, each with a theme.

The "Harris Feed and Grain" storefront was created to pay homage to Brown's uncle, Charles Harris, employed by Purina for many years. "Thalia's Café" was named after his grandmother, a marvelous cook, Brown said. A jail was erected to pay tribute to his great-grandfather, a former Baconton police chief. The "Williams Hardware Store," the mercantile storefront in the barn, captures the memories and skills handed down to Brown from his grandfather, Brooks Williams, who was a carpenter by trade.

"I'm using the skills and talents that I have been blessed with," Brown said. "It's a way to keep some of those memories alive. When I'm not here anymore, the next person that comes along will benefit from it."

On Oct. 27, 2001, the barn served as a memorable location for his daughter's wedding reception. Following an outdoor wedding on the front lawn of their homestead, the 200 guests transitioned to the barn, admiring the bridal silks draped from the rafters and the twinkling lights hovering over th
